The Barbaria's family

by Nunzio Longhitano

The name Barbaria can be found for the first time in the 900 scrolls in which lists the slaves held by the Archbishop, as a former Arab slave (as ethnic names Berbers as barbarians-at-barbariyyah) turned into serfs after the departure of the Arabs from Sicily.

The beginning

The first Barbaria appear in the parish register of marriages of Bronte, in the year 1801 (pp. 164 note n° 57) and they are D. Emanuele Barbaria, son of Paolo and Isabella Giovenio, who married on November 5, 1801 at the age of 20 years, Miss Illuminata Luca.

The family, that includes the head parent Don Paolo Barbaria, Donna Isabella Giovenio and the children Emanuele, Francesco and Angela, comes from Palermo or perhaps from Delia where there is still a considerable presence of families who bear the surname Barbaria.

The head of the family, Don Paul Barbara, resident in Bronte since about ten years, is a constructor and is called by Ven Ignazio Capizzi to collaborate in the construction of the college.

Other traces of this activity have been discovered recently (2006) during the restoration of the Cathedral Church or Matrix, in the chapel of SS. Sacramento, the flag of the Easter lamb, which contains the following inscription: "Work done the brothers Paolo and Francesco Barbaria 15/8/1895 (at the expense of SL).
The symbol "S. L. "stands for Signorino Longhitano probably Signurinu Bastùni (NDR).

As mentioned above, along with parents, as well as Emmanuel arrive in Bronte also the other two sisters: Angela (born in 1783, sequence position in the family tree 1.2) and Francesca who was born in 1882.

Angela first married Don Antonino Leanza and later (22.01.1855, Reg weddings n° 20, 86, p. 3 Act No. 51) Pace Gaetano Maria, son of Pace Leonardo and Vincenza Savullo;  his sister Francesca (Seq.#. 1.3 Family Tree), appears married to Nunzio Aidala.

The other brother, Emanuele (born in 1781, seq. # 1.1. In the family tree), married on November 5, 1801 at the age of 20 years, Miss Illuminata Luke of 16 years of age, daughter of Giuseppe and Mary Luca Pulvirenti.

From their marriage were born seven children who, presumably, are not in Bronte, as the  father, being a builder, was always moving with her family in other places for long periods:

-- On 31/12/1802 Francesca Giacoma (Reg Batt. 4, 35, p. 302) who married Nunzio Aidala (1786), the union of their first daughter Maria Nunzia (1821, seq. # 1.1.1.1) with Antonino Giuseppe Signorino Camuto (25.3.1813) originates an important branch of the family tree Camuto;

-- On 29/11/1804 Catherine Nunzia Isabella (Reg Batt. 4, 35, p. 302),

-- May 22, 1806 was born Giacomo Pietro Paolo, who marries 18/1/1933 at Bronte (Double Reg. 19, 85, p. 11) Ms. Paparo of 20 years, daughter of Pasquale and Giuseppa Leanza;

-- 10/2/1808 Carolina Carmela Isabella who on May 30, 1826 marries Nunzio Alessandro Attinà (30.3.1803);

-- Vincenzo Nunzio Giuseppe, Born on 19.5.1811, marries on 26.1.1837 Antonina Sgrò, daughter of Giuseppe and Carmela Paparo (Reg Matr. 19, 85, p. 86).

-- 2.2.1813 The Giuseppa Maria Elizabeth, and a year later,

-- On 3/11/1814, Giuseppe Mariano Vito (Reg Batt. 4, 35, p. 256), who married Anna Angela Lupo (21.12.1823).

The descendants of Paul

Of the seven children of Don Emanuele Barbara and  Illuminata Luke, we mention mainly the descendants of Don Giacomo Pietro Paolo Barbaria (born in 1807, seq # 1.1.3 of the family tree), whose birth there are no traces on his baptism' registers, but on that of the marriages of 1833 in which is noted his marriage to Miss Paparo of twenty-one years.

Their eldest son is Don Emanuele Barbaria (seq.# 1.1.3.1.) whose effigy can be seen in the Church of the Sacred Heart, having beenused as a model for the face of the Eternal Father, on relief above the altar.

In September 1860, a month after the tragic facts of Bronte, Emanuele married Maria Nunzia  Lupo, and is the second link between the families Barbaria-Lupo.

Their union generates ten children: Francesca Paola (1863-1863), Giovanni Paolo (1864-1937), Francesco (1867-1945), Vincenza (1870-1871), Nunzio Paolo (1871), Signorino (1873-1952) , Teresa (1879-1879), Teresa (1881-1947), Margaret (1884-1972) and Basilio (1886-1946). Some of them, in the early '900, emigrated to Argentina.

One of their children, Giovanni Paolo (seq.#1.1.3.1.2), the eldest, was born on June 18, 1864 in Bronte and was named, obviously, after his grandfather.

He married in 1893 Agata Caruso (1872-1946) and they also have 10 children:

Nunzio (1895-1972, who married Cecilia Barbaria), Nunzio (1896), Emanuele (1898-1952), Giuseppe (1900), Romualdo (1902 -- 1983, married in 1929 to Carolina Realini), Amelia (1904-1996), Ernesto (1907-1979), Elena (1908-1972), Biagio Decimo (Gino Barbaria, 1909-2001, "u Zzu ginu", seq.# 1.1.3.1 .2.9) and Adele (1912).

The third son of Giovanni Paolo, Emanuele (1898-1952, seq.# 1.1.3.1.2.3) followes his father's footsteps but eventually concludes its work in a stationery shop on the widening of the Corso Umberto I, close to Spedalieri square.

In 1920 he married Serafina Saitta, teacher, well loved by all his students; after Agatha Liliana, in 1924 was born Paolo Barbaria (seq.# 1.1.3.1.2.3.2) and from him, Emanuele Barbaria (seq.#1.1.3.1.2.3.2.2 ) currently the last descendent of the  family , (eight generations after the arrival in Bronte of the head parent Paolo Barbaria and Isabella Giovenio, whom he married in 1760).

Of the other sons of Don Emanuele Barbaria and Donna Maria Nunzia Lupo:

-- Francesco, my grandfather, (1867 - 1945, seq.# 1.1.3.1.3. Family tree), who, in 1892, married Nunziata Salvi.
Their children were Emanuel (1903-1984, married to Jolanda Politi, seq.# 1.1.3.1.3.5), whose Hardware Store was destroyed by a firebomb in the bombings of August 1943, Maria, Marianna, Margherita (my mother), and others.

-- Signorino Barbaria (1873 - 1952, seq.# 1.1.3.1.6.) who married Nunzia Catania in 1897. The children were Maria who married Nunzio Lupo, Emanuele, who emigrated to the United States, Margherita, a teacher at Adrano, Biagio ( "ginu Càffici").

-- Basilio Barbaria (1886 - 1946, seq.# 1.1.3.1.10.), In 1902 he married Maria Carastro. From them are born: the Air Marshal Emanuele, Nunziata, still alive, who marries Nino Franco, and  her sister Carmela, who lives in Catania, married to Giacinto Finocchiaro, accountant.

The daughters were Teresa (1881 - 1947, seq.# 1.1.3.1.8) who marries Carastro Nunzio in 1899 and Margherita (1884 - 1972, seq.# 1.1.3.1.9) who, in 1903, married Giuseppe De Luca, from Cesarò; from the marriage are born: Ciccio and Emanuele, Maria, Adele, Gino, Tina (Sister Ilaria) still alive.

The family tree (including over 2,000 people) will try to provide all other information relating to the Barbaria family from 1760 until the present day.
